After 30+ years, I know that true growth in celebrancy needs a safe learning space. Not just a room with chairs and a flipchart – somewhere you actually feel like you’re allowed to be human while you learn.
Because here’s what I’ve seen over and over again: when people don’t feel emotionally safe in training, they perform. They nod, they smile, they give the “right” answers, they hide what they’re really struggling with… and then they go home and still feel completely out of their depth.
But the work you’re stepping into as a celebrant is raw. You’re standing in front of people on some of the hardest and happiest days of their lives. If you can’t be honest about your own nerves, your own triggers, your own wobbles in training, where on earth are you supposed to learn how to handle them?
When the space is genuinely safe, everything changes. You’re more willing to say, “I don’t know what I’d do here.” You’re more likely to admit, “That kind of story really gets to me,” or, “I’m scared I’ll cry and won’t be able to stop.” And that honesty is gold, because then we can actually work with it. We can practise. We can build real, practical skills around those exact moments.
A secure environment also gives you permission to be vulnerable without feeling exposed. You can try something, feel your voice shake, and instead of being judged, you’re supported. You get feedback that builds you up rather than shuts you down. That’s how you learn to stay present and steady when a ceremony gets emotional – because you’ve already rehearsed being vulnerable in a room where you were held, not criticised.
That’s the heart of ICPC’s approach. Yes, we teach structure, language, delivery – all the practical bits. But we wrap it in a level of support that says, “You matter too.” You’re not just a future celebrant to be polished; you’re a whole person learning how to carry other people’s stories. When you feel valued and safe, your confidence doesn’t come from pretending – it comes from actually knowing you can handle it.
